I cut up pictures of myself that are based on familiar pictures
of the everyday girl posing for her boyfriend. The Jenny cam kind
of girl, the not so glossy paper girl, the imperfect, girl posing
to please. The girl that you won’t find in playboy but you
might certainly find on the Internet. The amateur sex object.
I started inside the fridge. I made little stands for my ‘dolls’
and photographed them everywhere in the house. In the cupboards,
in the bathroom, in the stove, on the black and white tiles of
the kitchen floor. I then took my dolls on walking trips- rode
them on the backs of pink flamingos faded among the tall grass
in a strangers yard. I taped them to the branch of a tree in the
woods, and let them hang from the mossy fluff of old man’s
beard.
The Tancook series is essentially about responding to one’s
environment, about inhabiting a new space, and responding to it
in a very different kind of way.
